Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy

The course will cover topics in Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy applied to satellite-borne remote sensing instruments designed to study and monitor the earth system. The topics will include: Structure of one-electron and many electron atomic systems; Influence of external magnetic and electric fields on atomic systems; Spectra of molecules and the signatures for rotational and vibrational energy transitions; Atmospheric scattering processes including Rayleigh, Mie and Raman scattering; Spectroscopic instruments including spectrometers, detectors, and filters; Fourier spectroscopy; Optical properties of materials.
